"One the most respected winemakers in the Cote Rotie region, Rene prides in traditional winemaking, with gentle maceration and little interference. The flagship red, Ampodium, is assembled from parcels throughout Côte Rôtie. It is a terrific expression of the appellation, and by itself rivals the appellation’s best. The wine delivers a complex, ripe and youthful bouquet of cassis, grilled meats, pepper, lovely soil tones, youthful stems, black olive, woodsmoke and a bit of cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite powerful for this cuvée, with the vintage's character adding musculature and a rock solid core. The finish is long, ripely tannic and well-balanced, with impressive nascent complexity and fine length and grip on the powerful finish."
Bottled in July, the 2015 Cote Rotie Ampodium is fairly full-bodied and quite rich. The black olive and raspberry notes verge on being jammy but are balanced by peppery spice and firm, savory tannins. Give it 5 years in the cellar to settle down, and drink it over the next decade and a half or more. For an entry-level wine, it's remarkable.
