Nisia Old Vines Verdejo 2015

Nisia Old Vines Verdejo 2015

This is a new project of Jorge Ordonez. The winery is located in the town of Puras, which sits on the border of Segovia in Rueda. All the vineyards are located in Segovia. It is not only the most southeastern area in the appellation of Rueda, but it is also the highest in elevation (2,850 ft). The soil is very poor and sandy and this area was able to resist phylloxera. The grapes for Nisia come from seven very old (up to 125 years old) small parcels of Verdejo vines trained in the vaso system. The grapes are hand harvested. The wine is aged sur lie and 20% is fermented in large French Oak barrels.

Wine EnthusiastPungent aromas of mustard, lees and citrus peel set up a slightly oily feeling palate. This tastes of salty citrus fruits, orange in particular. A solid, acidic finish is fresh for the most part but with a skin-driven texture.

Wine SpectatorPear, green almond and herbal flavors mingle in this fleshy white. Firm acidity keeps this focused, and the fruit shows depth and persistence. Drink now. 5,000 cases made.

Wine AdvocateThe 2015 Nisia is from poor, sandy soils of Rueda. This small, 50-acre vineyard has produced a crisp, dry 100% Verdejo that is aged eight months sur lie in 500- to 600-liter demi-muids and 40% in stainless steel. Light straw in color with notes of poached pear, a honeyed citrus and marmalade note and a medium body. This crisp, fresh, refreshing, surprisingly intense dry white should drink well for another year.
