Winemaker's Notes
This 21 acre vineyard is located on the far north end of the ridge. The higher clay levels in this soil give the wine strong ripe fruit notes. Considered a “Tom boy” of a wine, Ovello has a rougher edge to its tannins in its youth, but they become more integrated part of the wine’s personality as it ages. Ovello has an aging potential of 20 years. The first vintage of Ovello was produced in 1967.
Tasting Notes
Ruby red color. On the nose it is rich and ripe with notes of red fruits. The structure is full-bodied and intense with youthful tannins on the finish.
Food Pairing
Pairs well with fresh egg pastas, risottos, white meats, red meats, venison and cheeses.

A perfect mixed garden, with aromas of turned soil, blackberries ready to be picked, herbs fragrantly filling the air and warmed raspberries sitting in their basked weave their way into and out of the glass. Savory flavors of mixed herbs, tobacco and licorice root open the palate as flavors of cherry and marionberries pop with fresh acidity against a frame of elegant and taut tannins. Drink 2026-2050 — Jeff Porter
The Produttori del Barbaresco 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is a tighter wine with more elegant mineral definition compared to the 2020 vintage that I tasted at the same time. However, this wine is not as accessible and remains a little shy or closed at this young stage in its life. The tannins are well managed in this edition that naturally delivers more richness and concentration. It needs a little more time to shed that nervous tension.
Round and supple, this red features cherry, raspberry, rose, iron and menthol flavors. Though well-structured, this finishes with a flourish of red fruit and energy. All the elements are there, so give this a few years to integrate. Best from 2027 through 2045. —B.S.
The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is powerful, savory and intensely linear, in classico Ovello style, and yet it appears to have enough fruit behind its imposing tannins to develop well over the coming years. In this tasting, the Ovello feels pretty closed post bottling, but its inherent balance and qualities are there. Clean saline notes extend the finish in promising fashion.
Leafy lightness with a meaty character and earthy cherry and pomegranate notes. Firm tannins and crisp acidity on the classic, extracted palate, with massive structure, a medium body and a juicy finish. Drink or hold.
