Winemaker's Notes

The Property

Bearing the surname of Chevalier Antoine de Lascombes since the 17th century, the Château Lascombes is marked by the imprint of the ten generations of owners who have shaped its history. Since 2011, the mutualist group MACSF has been the owner. The wines of Château Lascombes are recognized as being among the greatest of the Margaux appellation.

The Vineyard

120 hectares in the Margaux appellation and 10 hectares in the Haut-Médoc appellation make up the vineyard of this Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855.

This vineyard is planted on a mosaic of plots whose soils are composed, depending on their location, of a gravelly mound, clayey gravels, and clay-limestone plots. Uniquely compared to other Margaux crus, the grape variety of the Château Lascombes vineyard is mainly composed of merlot, then cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot.

Vinification and aging

Harvested by hand, the grapes are sorted and then destemmed. A slight crushing is carried out before vatting. The pre-fermentation maceration lasts 10 days at 8°C. Alcoholic fermentation is followed by traditional vinification with light daily pump-overs to promote extraction. After malolactic fermentation in barrels, the aging on lees lasts 4 months.

Blend 50 % cabernet sauvignon, 47 % merlot and 3 % petit verdot.

Tasting

Color The color is of great depth.

Nose Expressive, the nose seduces with its rich aromas of ripe black fruits mixed with subtle woody notes resulting from aging.

Palate Of great precision, the palate presents a beautiful concentration and a tasty vivacity. The aromatic richness harmoniously combines with silky tannins. Discreet, the woody notes blend throughout the tasting until the finish of incredible persistence.

Service For optimal tasting, serve at 17°C.

Cellaring Château Lascombes 2015 can wait in the cellar until 2044 to express all its aromatic complexity.

Wine Enthusiast

This is a powerful wine, with wood aging that adds richness to the dense tannins. Some tough extraction has not detracted from the ripe fruit or structure and will go as the wine matures. It should be ready to drink from 2026.

Decanter

An excellent Lascombes in 2015. The fruit has tightened up and slowed down, with great depth to the finely grained tannic structure. Deep liquorice, damson, cassis and loganberry flavours are well balanced against the grilled oak notes and silky texture. Confident and poised. 70% new oak.

Wine Advocate

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Lascombes has a beautiful nose of black forest cake, violets, cassis and tilled soil with wafts of garrigue and potpourri. Medium-bodied, very fine and elegant with great intensity of restrained, earthy flavors, it has a long, savory finish.

Wine Spectator

Enticing, with a light mulled spice note moving amid the red and black currant fruit, while flashes of bramble, alder, juniper and tobacco skitter through. Reserved but lengthy in feel through the finish, with latent grip and a smoldering tobacco detail. Best from 2030 through 2032.
